From the Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington, D.C.

This year’s Veterans Day is especially sad for us as we learnt about the passing of Darrell Reed Bush, U.S. veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and a cherished friend of our Embassy. Darrell passed away peacefully at the age of 99. Our deepest condolences go out to his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his family. Darrell and Dorothy recently marked a remarkable milestone, celebrating their 81st wedding anniversary.

We feel particularly fortunate to have been able to spend many meaningful moments together with Mr. Bush, telling us firsthand his experiences during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Bush fought courageously with the 106th Infantry Division, 75th Division during one of the most decisive battles of the Second World War. His bravery and service made a lasting impact during a crucial time in history.

Mr. Bush’s actions earned him the Purple Heart. To thank him for his courage and bravery during the Battle of the Bulge, Luxembourg decorated Mr. Bush with the Order of Merit. Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian had the privilege and honor to personally present the distinction to Mr. Bush on June 29, 2022. We will forever carry his memory in our heart, honoring the legacy of his sacrifice.

Dear Darrell, thank you for your heroic services!

On this Veterans Day, we would also like to express our most heartfelt thanks to all the WWII veterans who fought so valiantly for our freedom and security. They paved the way for peace and democracy Luxembourg enjoys today.

In December this year we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge both in Luxembourg and Belgium welcoming some of the last surviving WWII veterans and their families, as well as two congressional delegations.

And we would like to honor all veterans who through their bravery, courage and sacrifice have been defending the values we cherish deeply: freedom, peace and democracy.
